2007 Gala Draws Many Friends |
The tenth Annual Gala at Connetquot River State Park
Preserve brought together over one hundred Park
supporters on Sunday, October 7th to enjoy the
festivities and the beautiful natural setting.

Brief
opening remarks by Richard Remmer and Gil Bergen
were followed by
the equestrian parade of Rough Riders Marvin
Glassman and Pete Columbo; Islip
Horsemen’s Association members Wendy Burling, Ken
Yanke, Jimmy
Wonzor, and
Joanne Gould; the Wilvert family driving their
Hufflinger and minis; and Lorraine
Burke with a dressage exhibition. Unfortunately,
this year, a mishap with Jerry
Weisman’s trailer prevented him from providing the
carriage rides through the
Preserve that are a favorite feature of all Gala
attendees.

On the new wrap-around deck, Little Toby Walker kept
toes tapping with his
ragtime-blues and country rhythms, while under the
tents everyone dined on a
delectable array of sea foods, chicken, pasta and
other gourmet dishes and refreshments
donated by local restaurants and beverage merchants.
Guests’ will power was
tested by tempting desserts contributed by local
bakeries and Mitzie Giffen, whose
home-made apple pie is a traditional favorite.
Throughout the event, Jamie Reason
demonstrated his remarkable decoy carving skills and
Tom Lowe displayed his
Harris’s hawks and enlightened the curious on the
subject of falconry. Walter
Hollien,
preservation architect for the Mill, was on
hand to explain phase two of the
mill restoration aided by a detailed model he
constructed. Inside the main building,
Stan Kallenbach entertained in the Billiard Room
with his string quartet. In other
areas of the building, Richard Steinberger brought
the art of fly tying to life with his
skillful hands while Bob Labusky showed his
beautiful photographs of the Park in
his media presentation. Also, a display of Robert
Vetter’s collection of old and
contemporary cultural objects made by woodlands
people underscored the historic significance of
these people who were the first to live and hunt
along the banks of the
Connetquot River.

In the main dining room, New York State
Assemblywoman Ginny Fields honored Richard Remmer
with a formal Proclamation for his dedicated service
to
the Friends. Later, during the live and silent
auctions, several paintings, woodcarvings, antiques,
fine jewelry, fishing equipment and other valuable
articles donated by our supporters kept many
participants bidding, under amiable prodding from
the auctioneer team of Remmer and Bergen.

Thanks to the many new and past loyal supporters of
the Friends, the Gala was a resounding success.. |
