FOC Newsletter, Chairman’s Letter, Spring 2012

Spring bloomed a little early this year. Daffodils, usually a mid April flower, blossomed in March. Connetquot Preserve was vibrant with color. In my frequent walks, I find that wildlife offspring are beginning to make an appearance. Ospreys are nesting while other birds are busy already rearing young or actively seeking out nesting sites. Many deer can be seen grazing in the fields.

On Saturday, March 3, an audience of about 30 attended the first of our 2012 lectures. Kurt Hirschberg, Project Coordinator for the architectural firm of Jan Hird Pokorny Associates, Inc., presented an excellent program that outlined the plan for progressing with the grist mill restoration. Meetings with the State are scheduled for this month to finalize some details that will allow the project to get rolling soon.

The architectural firm of Burton, Behrendt and Smith has again presented to the Board a revised plan and estimate for the long-range work on the new hatchery rearing house and educational facility. Presently, we are actively trying to secure a grant for the short-range modifications to the existing hatch house so we can start rearing fish from eggs this fall. Don’t forget to reserve your seat for our second lecture scheduled for June 2nd if you are interested in learning the details of the design plans for the hatchery upgrade and renovation.

Unfortunately, our Earth Day Family Walk of April 22nd with Shihan Mike Iannon was cancelled because of rain. However, we are starting a new Fitness Sunday Series of adult cardio walks for beginners and advanced joggers. See Page 5 for details.

Fishers are returning to the Preserve and lining up in the mornings as they had in the past. Apparently, word is spreading that the river is once again active. Brown and rainbow trout have been stocked by the DEC in March, April and May, so there is a good number of fish in the river for anglers. We are urging a catch and release program until we can supply more fish.

Eighteen photo enthusiasts attended my workshop on Saturday, April 14. I plan a follow-up session in the fall to take advantage of the rich foliage colors of that season. Details of the next workshop will be announced.

Our presentations to acquaint the public with the Preserve and its history are scheduled at three libraries: Sayville, Tuesday, June 5; East Islip, Thursday, June 14; and Bayport-BluePoint, Thursday, June 21, all begin at 7 p.m. Look for announcements and do try to attend for an informative evening on the origin of the Preserve.

Our 15th annual Trail Ride — held on Sunday, May 6 — was a big success. Many horse riders and hikers came to enjoy the festivities. See full coverage within this newsletter.

Check our website and Facebook page to keep abreast of events and programs. We are constantly seeking to add new programs for your enjoyment.

Please visit the park soon to enjoy the special beauty and bounty of this special and historic place.
