FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Winter 2013-14

As this is my first letter of the year, I'd like to extend my wishes for a healthy, happy New Year to all.

Some of our events and programs have already been held since our last communication. The Fall Fishing Outing in November brought out thirty hearty fishermen. The weather was brisk but sunny. The participants enjoyed the day along with a delicious luncheon supplied by the Snapper Inn. The Friends thank the Idle Hour Fly Fishers for their support and assistance toward the success of this event.

The first Birding and Breakfast of the year brought out so many enthusiasts that the usual one-day event was repeated the following day. After a brief introduction and lecture, groups of budding birders walked through the Connetquot Preserve and had many bird sightings.

Regarding the Nicoll Grist Mill restoration, grant reimbursements from the State have started to arrive. These funds, along with the many generous contributions received through our appeals, will allow construction to continue soon. Work on the mill had come to a halt due to lack of funds and weather. On behalf of the Friends, I would like to thank all our supporters who donated. Your partnership is invaluable in restoring the Mill as a working museum that will be an educational community resource and a Long Island tourist attraction.

Our Hatchery renovation project is also moving forward. We have received the necessary permit to install the well at the hatchery to supply ground water to the hatch house for raising fish from eggs. There are still a few unavoidable obstacles to overcome before work can begin.

On a sad note, we recently lost a valued member of the park staff. Pat Costello passed away on December 12. She was a dear friend of mine who always greeted everyone with a warm and friendly smile when approaching the Preserve's entrance booth. She will be missed and thought of everyday. A memorial bench will be placed in the Preserve in her honor.

The Board is actively preparing the other events and programs for the year, including the Lecture Series, Ladies' Tea, another Photography Workshop, I Love My Park Day, the annual Trail Ride, and more. You will find some details in this newsletter, but please keep checking our website,, for more information.

In closing, I would like to invite all to visit the Preserve and attend many, if not all, of the events that we have planned for you.

Bob Labuski
