FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Fall 2015

As the colors of autumn fade and winter draws near, the Friends keep busy preparing for the final events of 2015 and planning those for the coming year. We are happy to say that our most important fundraiser, the Gala, held on November 2, was a success thanks to the great support it received from many of our members and loyal business and other friends who donated prizes, money, and attended the Gala. Please turn the page to see photographs and a full report of what was a very warm and rewarding gathering of similar-minded folk who are always at the ready to show their appreciation for this very special place we all love, the Connetquot River State Park Preserve.

Likewise, the Fishing Outing of October 9 was attended to full capacity and was thoroughly enjoyed by every angler, in particular due to the good efforts of Board members Ed Kelleher and Joe Mikulas who coordinated this event. As always, the Breakfast and Birding had a good number of bird watchers show up at the Preserve to enjoy the breakfast goodies that the Friends provide and the expertise that the Great South Bay Audubon guides offer as the participants walk the trails looking for birds.

As I write this, our previously postponed Annual Meeting is in the offing and will have taken place by the time this newsletter reaches you. I worked very hard to put together a program that shows the Connetquot Preserve at its best in every season. I hope many of you will get to see it.

The planning of one future event is presenting a challenge. With Rita and Jerry Trapani having retired from the Board of Directors, the Friends has not yet succeeded in finding someone who is willing to fill their very big shoes as organizers of the annual Trail Ride. I'm appealing to all our equestrian members first, to help us in our search for a willing and capable person who would agree to coordinate this fun event and, second, for assistance in planning and soliciting donations for our next Trail Ride, which is tentatively scheduled for May 1, 2016. This event has been very well attended for the past twenty years and we wish to continue the tradition. I would appreciate hearing from all those who may be interested in helping. Please contact me by email (, or call the park's Environmental Office (631-581-1072) to leave your name and contact information.

Our restoration projects are continuing apace. The fish hatchery reopening is gaining momentum. This project has taken a long time, due to careful planning, design, and construction. We are looking forward to its completion.

We have applied for another New York State grant that will allow us to embark on the final phase of restoring the Nicol Grist Mill, thus the construction work is presently on hold until we hear–in the next couple of months–whether our application succeeded. Nevertheless, if weather cooperates, we have reason to hope that this project will be completed shortly and the museum tours will commence soon afterward.
