FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Spring 2015

Spring is a busy season for the Friends. Aside from the ongoing work on the Mill and Hatchery, three events and three Friends’ programs kept many of the Board members and other helpful volunteers hopping in April and May.

On April 18, the instructive Photography Workshop attracted sixteen people interested in improving their photographic skills. It was a cool, sunny day. Many daffodils were in bloom. The Bald Eagle, that has been visiting the preserve lately, made a surprise appearance; unfortunately it didn’t stay long enough to be captured as a photo subject on that day. At a later date, however, a lucky visitor did photograph the eagle.

The evening of April 24, Erik Kunz of Seemore Carnivorous Gardens presented his Show and Tell Carnivorous Plant Workshop to the delight of over twenty carnivorous plant admirers, all of whom went home with their own potted Venus Fly Trap.

Then, came Ladies' Tea day on April 26. This event drew almost one hundred women and required two sessions; the ladies all enjoyed an elegant afternoon with tea and raffles.

May 2, was I Love My Park Day. Over seventy volunteers came to Connetquot Preserve and helped with many tasks, such as cleaning and repairing benches and picnic tables, preparing the flower garden for planting, restoring stream and fishing sites, and general painting.

The annual Fun Trail Ride was held on May 3. Many local equestrians arrived to enjoy a spectacular day. A special thank you goes out to Jerry and Rita Trapani for all their hard work to make this event as special as it always is.

Budding bird watchers had their day on May 10. The Friends, Parks, and Great South Bay Audubon partnered for a Breakfast and Birding program that attracted nearly forty visitors. The weather was beautiful and many species of our feathered friends were on hand to provide wonderful viewing.

Unfortunately, the reptile and amphibian program that was scheduled for 16th May had to be postponed. Stay tuned for the new date, probably in late fall.

As you can see there are events of all kinds that can be enjoyed by visitors with all tastes. Many more are planned, please visit our website and Facebook regularly to see the complete schedule.

Regarding the Hatchery and Grist Mill restoration projects, preparations are in progress to begin drilling the well to supply fresh water to the hatchery for the purpose of raising trout from eggs. Drilling, water testing and all necessary piping will be accomplished in the next month or so. Completion work on the historic Grist Mill will be continuing shortly. Original mill grinding stones will be placed and a new water wheel will be constructed. A new entrance courtyard and information kiosk is in the design stages. When completed, the mill will be open for tours that will explain its ancient technology and past milling operations.
