FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Winter 2015

We're in the grip of winter as I write this. Over twenty inches of snow have turned to ice on the ground … and more snow is forecasted for the near future. But we can all take heart at the Connetquot Preserve, where the beauty of winter is palpable and the promise of spring is already ringing out in the tentative song of its birds.

On Saturday, January 17, a full house of eager birders attended our first Birding and Breakfast of the year. Many birds were sighted, including a Bald Eagle. See additional information within this newsletter.

Our first lecture of the year, "The South Side Sportsmen's Club, the People and the Place," drew over twenty-five attendees. Our speaker, Mark Romaine, presented many interesting facts on the origin of the club and the notable, interesting people who were members.

The Friends continue guiding the Nicoll Grist Mill and Hatchery projects toward the finish line. As soon as weather allows, the Mill's contractor will give the roof shingles some finishing touches and will clean up the site in preparation for the completion phase, which will put the original grinding stones back in place and allow them to turn by a replica of the original horizontal water wheel. After the work is completed, we expect the Mill will be ready for guided visits. We are also working on developing and installing signs that will explain the restoration and history of the mill and describe milling operations.

Drilling of the required well for the Fish Hatchery is expected to begin when the ground has thawed. From start to finish, this could take about three months. Hiring of a fish expert to oversee the operations, purchasing of fish, fish eggs and food are just some of the other details to be addressed.

The Friends have many interesting events and new educational programs scheduled at the Preserve for your enjoyment. Please visit our Facebook page and click through our website for a full listing.

DO take advantage of the nice days and visit the Preserve. Spring will be here soon!
