FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Fall 2016

Now that the Connetquot Trout Hatchery is back in full operation, after a long eight years of closure, it is extremely encouraging to note the number of fishermen increasing every week. This trend should continue, as we expect the first batch of fish raised from eggs in the hatchery to be released into the river in the spring. In the meantime, more eggs will be hatched in the next month or so to keep many more anglers returning in the future.

Regarding the Grist Mill restoration, the necessary permits from the Department of Environmental Conservation were finally obtained and much of the pending work is finally underway. A new access ramp and information kiosk are now in place, and the rest of the construction and inspections should be completed by the end of December.

Sponsored by a grant from the Gerry Charitable Trust, Friends' Board member Bob Giffen, has written and published a book about the history of the Preserve and the South Side Sportsmen's Club, titled One Little River; all proceeds from the sale of this publication are donated to the Friends of Connetquot. The Preserve's gift shop will have the book available for purchase at a discounted price. Copies will soon be available for purchase through the Friends' website, but they are also available through Barnes & Noble and Amazon at list price. We thank the Gerry Charitable Trust for their support of this publication.

Our nineteenth annual Gala was held on November 7, dedicated to the memory of Fran Levesque. A record number of 120 guests turned out to enjoy a remarkable evening made possible by the generosity of many members, organizations, and businesses. The Friends are energized by your tremendous support of this and all of our endeavors.

We are already busy planning next year’s schedule of interesting programs. Keep watching for our announcements and take advantage of this enjoyable and educational opportunity we offer.

The seasons seem to be changing very quickly. The warmth of summer is past, the colors of fall are fast fading and will probably be gone by the time you read this. For those who look forward to winter, the Preserve is always beautiful after a snowfall.
