FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Summer 2017

It was time for me to relinquish my position as President and Chairman of the Friends of Connetquot; thus, as of July 1, 2017 I have resigned. However, I have a deep appreciation for Connetquot River State Park Preserve and a keen interest in the work and future of this organization, so I will remain on the Board and hope to do so for a long time to come.

I discovered Connetquot River State Park Preserve in 1973. I was a novice fly fisherman, spending my time fishing at local parks with an occasional fishing trip upstate. I was driving by the Preserve one morning, on my way to work, when I noticed there was a State Park sign at the entrance. On the following Saturday, I investigated and discovered that with a permit, and a valid fishing license, I could try my luck at catching trout. This started an ever-lasting love for one of the most beautiful tracts of land on Long Island. The place was not yet known to the general fishing community. It was a pleasure to arrive at opening time, have my choice of prime fishing sites and enjoy four hours of my favorite sport. THEN, news got around. More and more fishermen began to arrive early and eventually there was a line of cars on Sunrise Highway about a quarter mile long, waiting for the gates to open. It became more and more difficult to get a fishing site. Eventually, I decided to give up and take up a new hobby, photography. I could still get in early and walk the trails and photograph the abundant wildlife, which I still do to this day.

Eventually, I also volunteered to help out at the hatchery, cleaning screens, feeding fish, cleaning dead eggs from the rearing trays in the hatch house. I helped in any way I could.

In 1997, Friends of Connetquot was formed. It was an honor to be selected as one of the original members of the Board. I am still a member and for more than eight years was president of the organization.

Friends of Connetquot is a godsend to the Preserve. Working together, we have overcome many challenges, improved and preserved this historic gem. If you have not yet read One Little River, a historic account of the early days of the property, and the Southside Sportsmen's Club, I urge you to do so. You can purchase a copy at the Preserve or through the Friends' website, this book will help you to better understand the dedication of our organization for the Connetquot Preserve.

I wish my successor, Chairwoman Ginny Fields, her Vice Chairman, David Reisfield, and Secretary, Tom Casey, well in their terms.

Thank you for your past support, and I trust that you will continue to partner with the new officers of the Friends toward a yet brighter future for the Connetquot River State Park Preserve.
